Third Grade News - September 7th, 2018

What we have done:
This week we have worked on using tape diagrams to solve multiplication problems and division problems. In content, we continued to learn about how the westward expansion affected the Native Americans. In writing, we worked on our personal narratives. In language, we worked on making predictions, questioning and vocabulary.

Happening this week:
ELA:
We will be reading Babushka’s Doll this week. Students will be working on making predictions and using questioning to help understand their reading. They also will go over making connections. We will work on a narrative writing piece and learn how to organize our writing and how to make revisions and to edit for mistakes.

Math:   
We are going to continue to learn about division and multiplication. We will also continue to learn about the distributive property again.                                 

Content:
We will not have content this next Friday because there is no school.

Other Information:
There is no school next Friday! Teachers have professional development this day.

Third Grade News - August 31, 2018

What we have done:
We have wrapped up NWEA testing this week! We have learned about different reading strategies and how to apply them in our own reading. In math, we have continued to learn about multiplication and division. We have practiced how to use the commutative and distributive property.

Happening this week:
ELA:
Students will be working on making predictions and using questioning to help understand their reading. We will work on a narrative writing piece and learn how to organize our writing and write interesting introductions.
Math:   
We are going to continue to learn about division and multiplication. We will learn strategies to multiply by 3’s and 4’s.                                                                                                         
Content:
Students will be creating projects about the impact Westward Expansion had on the Native Americans.

Other Information:
There is no school on Monday! Remember grandparents day is Friday, September 7th from 12:00-1:00. If your child has a grandparent coming and they are planning on taking them home from school, please send in a note to your child’s teacher.

Third Grade News - August 24, 2018

This coming week, students will be NWEA testing each morning in Math, Reading, Language and Science.  Please help your child be to school on time, get a good night’s sleep and eating a breakfast either at home or at school.

What we have done:
We had an awesome first full week of school.  Students are continuing to learn the procedures and expectations.  We have been building our reading and writing stamina.  In Math we are working on different strategies to solve for the unknown number in multiplication and division problems.  Below you  will find what will be happening next week.

ELA:
We are starting an author study on Patricia Polacco reading Thunder Cake this week.  We will be using different strategies to dig deeper into the book throughout the week.   

Math:   
We are continuing to use strategies with multiplication and division problems.  If you notice your child struggling with a concept, please help them with the practice sheets they bring home.                                                                                                         
Content:
Students will be learning about the impact Westward Expansion had on Native Americans.
Other Information:
Please have your child read at home each night to practice their reading skills.  You can ask them questions about the book they are reading giving you the who, what, where, when, why and deeper questions what if, what did the author want you to learn, etc.

Third Grade News - August 17, 2018

Welcome back to school.   I’m excited to be apart of your child’s learning this year.  I will post the weekly news on my Clever teacher blog page at: https://cleverdodson.blogspot.com   If  you have  any questions or concerns, please let me know.  I want to make this the best year possible and keep the lines of communication open.

What we have done:
We have had a wonderful first two days of class!  We have been working on our classroom procedures, expectations, and getting to know each other.  Below you  will find what will be happening next week.

ELA:
Students will be focusing on understanding and following the routines for Reader’s and Writer’s Workshops.  Also I will be listening to each child read during this month to find out what their reading level is currently.  Hopefully, your child is reading each night at home to help practice their reading ability and fluency with word recognition. 
Math
We are starting Module 1 of Eureka Math where students will begin learning multiplication.  Students will know how to use repeated addition, arrays, and equal groups as strategies to solve multiplication problems.                                                                                                         
Content:
Students will be learning about the Louisiana Purchase and we will begin exploring with Lewis and Clark.
Other Information:
Water bottles are welcome as long as they have a lid.   Students are not allowed to bring any toys from home to have at recess.

Third Grade News - May 11, 2018

What we have done:
This week, the students used area to create their own zoo. Also a brochure to share about their zoo.   Students  finished writing different types of poems and tested over them.  We have continued working on reading and language skills too.

This Coming Week:

ELA:
NWEA testing  over reading and language skills.  Students  will start writing their own storybook.

Math:   
NWEA testing over math concepts.  Students are being timed over multiplication facts.

Content:
NWEA testing over science.

May 14-May 18 NWEA Testing
May 21- Read-a-thon
May 22- Field Day
May 23- Last Day, ½ Day(dismissal at 12:00pm)

Third Grade News - May 4, 2018

What we have done:
This week, the students have been very busy MAP testing! They have worked so hard and we are very proud of them. In writing we started our poetry unit and the students have gotten a chance to write their own poems.

This Coming Week:
ELA:
We will continue to teach and assess poetry. We will practice some reading strategies to prepare the students for NWEA testing  for the following week.

Math:   
In math, the students will be working on a project involving area and perimeter.

Content:
We will start discussing Missouri symbols and important monuments.

May 14th-May 18th NWEA Testing
May 21st- Read-a-thon
May 22nd- Field Day
May 23rd- Last Day, ½ Day(dismissal at 12:00pm)

Third Grade News - April 27, 2018

What we have done:
In math, we have been learning about lines, shapes and perimeter.  In ELA, we have been learning about literal and nonliteral phrases with similes and metaphors.  We have been practices reading strategies too.

This Coming Week:

ELA:
We will start discussing poetry and learn about the different types of poems. We will continue this into next week and will also be writing poems. 
Math:   
We will not be doing math this week because of MAP testing!

Content:
We will not be discussing any content this week.
